Sit and Go Poker StrategySit and Go Tournament Strategy By Don Lewis of Poker-Times.com
Your making money in ring games and now you want to try your hand at a single table tournament. One of the first things that you need to know is that this is the best way to practice at making the final table in a multi table tournament as well as working your skill in controlling your own table.
Whether you start with 1000 or 1500 in chips, stack management matters. Unless you have the nuts, going all-in is something that you shouldn’t do or you should at least try to avoid.
Let's begin with a 10 man sit and go tourney. The only way that you make money is if you make the top 3 places. In general they pay 50% for first, 30% for second and 20% for third. Fourth through tenth get sent home packing with nada.
The advice that I give my buddies is very simple... Play to win but understand when you are on the bubble play tight, your goal is to make money. That IS why we play isn’t it? When you get down to 4 people it really is a waiting game and the longer you wait to make a move the better off you are. With that being said, I do understand that there are times that you can’t wait because of the blinds and there are times that you get dealt AA and you just GOTTA play, especially when the odds are in your favor. But DO NOT PLAY JUST TO PLAY A HAND!

Waiting can be very frustrating but this is where you really make money. Play premium hands and try your best to only play those types of hands. Think about what you are calling with and don’t give up. You would be surprised as to how many tournaments that I have won or taken second in by being patient. Even when I have been down to 4 or 5 hundred in chips with 4 people left! With blinds being $500 to $1000 many times, the other people try stealing blinds from each other by going all-in. Unless you have a 2 or 3 to 1 chip advantage you may think twice about going all-in. Anyway, the other two guys got crazy with the big stack holding rockets and the three guys went all-in and the big stack won and yes he killed me as well but I made 40 bones just by being patient. See how that plays out?
Too many times we get caught up in the action or think that this is the best hand I have seen in a long, long, time however, if you don’t take your time and be patient, you may just as well flush your loot down the toilet cause you ain't gonna win without almight patience. Have fun and good luck at the sit and go’s.
