Rule 1: Tournaments are not for everyone
Multi-table poker tournaments are suddenly all the rage in the gambling world, but that’s no reason to play them. These tournaments require a unique approach and a special level of expertise before they can become profitable. If you really want to play in a tournament, start with cheap or even free tournaments, gain some experience, and develop your skills.
Rule 2: Reading your opponents
All forms of gambling require a thorough understanding of game strategy, but poker also involves a set of subtle nuances that must be mastered. These include bluffing and reading your opponents. A successful poker player not only knows the odds on every hand and every flop, but also knows how to scare other players out of a pot, and when it’s time to muck the hand.
Rule 3: Self control is key
Self-control is always a fundamental element in any form of gambling, but in poker it’s absolutely crucial. Self-control includes selecting what type of limits to play, as well as what hands to fold. It also means keeping your composure when you’ve got the nuts.
