Poker LingoIntroduction to Poker Lingo by Don Lewis of Poker-Times.com
Listed below you'll find some of the poker jargon that you'll see/hear at the tables. We adivse that you read up on all this stuff, because if you don't know these you probably shouldn't be playing for real money!
Blinds (Small or Big Blind): Forced bet that takes the place of an ante. The player to the left of the dealer pays the small blind and the person to their left must pay the big blind.
Board Cards (Also known as the Community Cards): The cards in the middle of the table that are shared by all players in which you use three of them in addition to your two hole cards to make a Texas Hold'em hand.
Drawing: Drawing means that you are hoping to improve your hand with the cards that will come on the board. You are on a draw when you want other cards to come out on the board to complete your hand. If you have Q J and the flop is 10K5, you are trying to draw a 9 or a A on the turn or river to have a made hand.
Preflop: This term refers to having two cards in your hand (aka: pocket or hole cards) and there are no cards on the board yet.
Burn Card: A burn card is the card that is placed face down on the table prior to turning over any card or cards (by the dealer).
The Flop: This is when the first three community cards come out in Texas Hold’em.
The Turn: This is the fourth community card that comes out in Hold’em, after the flop.

The River: This is the fifth and last card that comes on the board in Hold'em, after the turn. If you ever hear any players say "I got rivered!" that means that the last card made their hand. You may also hear players at the table crack jokes about the player "chasing." Chasing is a sure way to lose money long term!
Position: Where you sit at the poker table. The dealer has the best position because he bets last and therefore has a better understanding of what other people might have in their hand by the way that they bet or check. The small blind has the worst position because he goes first in the betting sequence.
Playing Shorthanded: A game with six or fewer players.
Playing Longhanded: A poker game with seven or more players.
Outs: Number of cards that can improve your hand. If the flop is10 K 2 and you have QJ, you want an Ace or a 9 to complete your straight. There are 4 Aces and 4 nines in the deck, so you have 8 total outs.
Limit Poker: Poker with fixed bets. In a $1-2 limit game, all bets and raises are $1 in the first two rounds being the preflop and the flop, and all bets and raises are $2 in the last two rounds being the turn and the river.
No Limit Poker: This is a game that you may at any time go all-in. Meaning you will be placing all your chips in jeopardy on any given hand. With this you will want to play for a bit before trying to play as it can be costly and you'll find some very "poker educated" sharks in these games.
Pot Limit Poker: In this type of betting structure you may raise the amount of the money in the pot as a maximum wager. This is a game you will want to be very experienced at before playing for real loot otherwise you can lose your arse.
