Howard LedererNickname: The Professor
Name: Howard Lederer
Favorite Game: Big Buy in No Limit Hold’em tournaments
In the beginning as a child Howard played card games all the time with his family on the floor. It wasn’t until he moved to New York in pursuit of his real passion at the time chess. While there in the back room of his favorite club there was a poker game after playing he was hooked. he went on to start playing 70 to 80 hours a week on top of running errands for other players to make up his stake to buy in to the next nights game. Because in the early years Howard went home broke 9 out of 10 days but lack of sleep would soon catch up to him and he found that with more sleep his game greatly improved and he started making some money.
The real improvement came when he started playing with Dan Harrington, Steve Zolotow, Jay Heimowitz, and Erik Seidel at the Mayfair Club in New York. No Limit Hold’em was not popular in the 80’s, but it was becoming so. But these fellows began to experiment with it and the ideas began to flow between these great players. They would leave after the game hit a bar and discuss the day’s game and the strategies that they were using and what they could have done better. It was an invaluable learning environment.
In 1994 after helping Anne Duke his sister with her game and talking her into entering the World Series of Poker they made history as the first Brother Sister Duo to be at the same final table. She knocked him out and has done so 3 other times at the World Series of Poker.
In 1993 Howard moved to Las Vegas and worked cash games in order to bring his game to the next level. Then in 2002 when the World Poker Tour became monthly event he was playing more in those to hone his skill and enjoy the competition. They say his eyes can look through you and many have fallen under his steady unrelenting gaze. Look for the professor to continue to make an impact in big money tournaments, the World Series of Poker and on the World Poker Tour.
