There are many different stories having to do with the history of poker. Depending on who you ask, you will hear all kinds of stories, none of which can truly be confirmed.
Despite seeing poker on old western movies and gunfighter ballads,
no, poker did not originate during this era. The history of poker
actually "possibly" goes back all the way to China back in 900 A.D.
in which the chinese played card games of a similar method.
The history of poker is also said to stem from Persia where "As
Nas" was played, India where Ganjifa, France where Poque was played,
and last but not least Germany where it was called Pochen.
It wasn't until the early 1800's (around 1834) in which poker
was found to be documented, which was by a fella by the name of
Jonathan Green. It is also said that the actual deck of cards was
created in France, which by our research appears to be 100% true.
From France poque came to America where it was to be called Poker.
The game was brought to New Orleans and played on Mississippi riverboats
and boats on the Ohio River.
Poker appeared to have really exploded in popularity during the
Civil war in which it gave soldiers something to do while at war
and in their barracks. Different variations of poker began to take
shape in which stud poker, draw poker, and the straight become popular
thus creating a massive change poker history.
During the 20th century the history of poker changed as cards started
to be dealt face down. Later on poker evolved into many casinos
in which the game became so big "poker rooms" were created. Players
such as Doyle Brunson, Amarillo Slim, and others became pros at
the game and had such an edge that they were able to play the game
professionally as their main source of income, and for good money
as well!

around the world and has even gone online where you can play for
free or for real money at legit online

It is said that the popularity of poker reaches over 100 million
people around the world. We believe this figure to still be very
small compared to what it will eventually hit. As crazy as it sounds,
poker is just now taking off and will be a much heard of fixture
over the next decade with the best yet to come.
