Doyle Brunson
Doyle Brunson may be the best poker player to play the game...EVER.
Brunson, a 2 time World Series of Poker Champion, revolutionized
poker and is somewhat responsible for how big the game is today.
Brunson is also an author who wrote "How I Made Over $1,000,000
Playing Poker" as well as Doyle Brunsons Super System and Doyle Brunsons Super System 2.
Unbeknownst to most, Brunson was also an exceptional athlete who was drafted by the Lakers back in the day. A knee injury forced Brunson to end his hopes of playing pro ball. This however didn't prevent Doyle Brunson from keeping his competitiveness in tact. Doyle turned his time and energy to poker for which we're all to be thankful for. After working a regular job for a very short time after college, Brunson figured he could make more playing poker. In the late 60's Brunson moved his family out West to Las Vegas in search of more poker games than were offered in his home state of Texas. Brunson promptly went on to win the World Series of Poker in 1976 and 1977. His book, "Super System" was also a hot topic of discussion amongst both poker players looking to get better and pros who were upset that Brunson would reveal all the goods which could create a stiffer brand of competition.
So what is Brunson's? "Aggressive play" says the 70+ year old former
champ. Doyle Brunson argued that the best poker players he knew
were aggressive in their style of play. Brunson at one time was
said to boast that "he could win in most games without ever looking
at his cards." He would be able to win solely through the use of
aggressive betting tactics meaning whatever cards he held were comparatively
unimportant. It's an of course an analagy, but the point he is making is
key.
Inducted into the poker hall of fame in Las Vegas, Brunson who goes by the nickname "Texas Dolly" can be found playing in high stakes poker games in Las Vegas with winning pots exceeding most people's annual incomes. Poker is not the only thing Brunson is popular for though. Doyle has been known to drop big money on his golf matches, sometimes up to a half mill. Doyle is also big into handicapping baseball games and loves to crunch stats. Poker-Times.com salutes Doyle Brunson and tips our hats in honor of a man that helped form poker to what it is today. A thinking man's game.
